<blockquote><p>A recent storm that swept through our part of the country left our household, and indeed thousands more, without power for almost 48 hours. Emergency signal alarms blared from our cell phones at 5 in the morning, warning of 80 mph winds and severe thunder storms and urging us to take shelter. After all, it was early morning hours and the relentless heat and humidity that characterizes almost every day here in Eastern Nebraska in August had not really set in yet. In fact, sitting out on the front porch waiting for the full sunrise to reveal the extent of the storm’s damage, there was a light breeze and if you let your imagination really run wild, even a slight chill to the air. A very light rain was still dripping off the eaves and there was sheet lightning in the north. It was beautiful to behold, this waiting-to-view destruction moment.<br></p><p>But as the morning progressed, realization upon gradual realization washed over us. How many times did I flip a light switch only to be reminded that the power was out? Wait, what? Our well water runs off an electric pump? The water to the house consisted of only what was left in the water heater tank when the power went out. Our generator overheated and stopped running. We were in pretty good shape except were a bit short on bottled water and batteries. I ran to the store only to find everyone else had the same idea. The line at the drive-thru coffee shop had twenty cars – the inhabitants eagerly awaiting caffeine in order the face the challenge of storm cleanup. </p><p>I finally returned home with the needed supplies only to be reminded by my husband not to open the refrigerator or the freezer, as we needed to conserve what refrigeration there was. And to be honest, until he told me not to open the<br>refrigerator, I never realized how badly I really needed that yogurt I had stashed on the second shelf.</p><p>We walked the property, stunned at the trees that had been felled or limbs torn off. There was damage and debris everywhere but nothing irreparable. I felt shocked but oh so thankful that we had weathered the storm with no damage to our house or persons. Oh great! How to charge my phone without electricity? I felt like an idiot. I started the car and plugged in my phone. This would do in a pinch, but seriously, I needed to stop sending videos and pictures to everyone.</p><p>And it was so hot! Ninety-six degrees degrees outside and not a breeze! And of course we had been out with many of our neighbors, clearing trees and debris from the neighborhood roads, driveways, and ditches as well as from our own property. We were sweltering! And when we took shelter indoors, we found that without air conditioning, our house felt like a sauna – and not in a good way!</p><p>With no Internet, no television, no radio, and not even the quiet hum of an appliance running anywhere in the house, I got to experience what real silence was. And as night fell and we retreated to the basement where it was cooler, we got to experience total darkness. This is one of the Lord’s requests that is so difficult for many of us to do. Our minds race with a thousand different thoughts and fragments – and no sooner do we settle down to pray or meditate than our mind wanders to trivial matters. But on this night, after the storm had passed – and in total silence and darkness I found that comforting stillness the Lord was talking about. </p><p>And I felt assured that when the world came to life again, I would be able to find that stillness inside of myself. </p><p>And the stillness became peace. </p><p>And I slept.</p>

Because at some point in the journey from childhood to adulthood, most of us stopped bouncing.</h3><h3>We traded the trampoline for timetables, traded spontaneous joy for structured goals. And yet, as we watch the children leap and laugh, something deep inside us stirs—a memory of how freedom once felt.</h3><h3>That weightless, reckless joy. My granddaughters tell me about their dreams and about their lives — and I tell them stories of when their parents were their age. What starts as a gentle background of classical music suited to a genteel tea party quickly becomes the next chapter of our gathering. They introduce me to their favorite pop songs — cheerful, catchy tunes that we sing along to at the top of our lungs. </strong></p><p><strong>Music, the great leveler, turns us all into “Swifties.” In return, I play them some classic rock n’ roll and they fall over laughing that their grandmother used to rock out to groups with names like Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Eagles. We laugh, compare dance moves, and talk about how music makes us feel. I’m always amazed by how easily music builds a bridge between our generations. Whether it’s the latest Taylor Swift song or an old rock n’ roll classic, the joy is the same. </strong></p><p><strong>It’s in those impromptu moments — spinning in circles, hands clasped, skirts flying — that memories are made. That person who keeps coming to mind? That nudge to serve somewhere new? That job you didn’t think you were qualified for but can’t shake?</strong></p><p><strong>God’s opportunities often look like interruptions, inconveniences, or even burdens. But through prayer and reflection, we begin to see that these aren't random—they're divine setups.</strong></p><blockquote><h3>Ask yourself: Is this drawing me closer to God? Does it align with His character? When God Gives Us Opportunities: Recognize, Respond, and Rise

<h3>The minute I bent over the side of my husband’s truck to heft the 30-pound bag of ground corn from the pickup bed, I knew I was in trouble!</h3><p>What was I thinking? Even twenty years ago, this would have been a strenuous task, and here I was struggling with the weight of this chore that could have easily waited.</p><p>After all, my husband had promised he would unload the two bags later in the day but... well, you guessed it. Well, now I was really annoyed but still determined to finish the task.</p><p>I awkwardly hefted the bag over my shoulder (ouch!) and limped to the back of the garage, where I unceremoniously dumped the bag in a heap on the ground. On an average day, the tasks I have planned fill a page on my to-do list. Nothing more to do here”? And I make more work (or pain) for myself than was necessary.</p><p>I imagine the Lord looking down and just shaking His head as He watches His people struggle when we don’t have to.</p><p>The Bible tells us that God will help us with every big and little thing we undertake—if we just ask Him. God will gladly shoulder our burdens or help us carry them, if we just ask.</p><p>He was built for heavy lifting. Of course, we know God is there for us, that He will carry us and carry our burden too.</p><p>But the little things—really? Isn’t that somehow demeaning to the Lord to ask for help with all the little stuff?</p><p>With all the really important things He has going on—like wars, famine, human strife, natural disasters, hunger, and crime, just to name a few? Well, the short answer is no. </p><h3>God expects us to turn to Him for help with everything.</h3><p>If you don’t believe me, just give it a try. I wasn’t as tired after a mammoth shopping trip for groceries because I spent less time wandering up and down aisles looking fruitlessly for items on my list.</p><p>The grandkids didn’t bicker as much and we spent more time laughing together. My yardwork was a pleasure because I didn’t have to make a half-dozen trips to the gardening shed for something I had forgotten.&nbsp;<br></p><p>Just recently, I was doing a sewing project with my two granddaughters, and as I started to thread the needle on my sewing machine, I stopped, looked Heavenward, and said a quick:</p><p><strong>“Help me, Lord, to thread this needle.”</strong></p><figure id="figure-omuzgouleemcgsxhv4"><img id="omuzgouleemcgsxhv4" src="https://media.gettyimages.com/id/2178668815/photo/a-woman-threads-a-sewing-machine-needle-sewing-needle-and-foot-in-a-sewing-machine-sewing.jpg?b=1&amp;s=2048x2048&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=3bFbGjWFz2SZvNUh61muyDJ8tVSJbgUQiQkQPMIc16k=" alt="A woman threads a sewing machine needle. A Little Help Here, Please!

If you’ve been stuck in a rut, consider changing your venue. If at all possible, head to a local coffee shop for a change of pace.
